Will BHS principal be non-renewed for 2017-18?

BLANCHESTER — Blanchester High School Principal Rick Hosler faces non-renewal of his contract for the 2017-18 school year. The matter is slated to be addressed by the board of education at its Monday, May 15 meeting.

“I met with Rick on Friday, May 5,” Superintendent Dean Lynch told the News Journal Monday. “I shared with him my intent on bringing a non-renewal of his contract before the school board on the 15th.”

Lynch declined to address specifics of the matter, saying, “The board stance, as always, is not to discuss personnel issues publicly.”

Hosler was put on paid administrative leave in November 2015 and returned to work at the school in January 2016.

The News Journal reported in January 2016 that Blanchester Board of Education President Chuck Shonkwiler and Hosler’s attorney, John Concannon, said the investigation of alleged misconduct of Hosler was finished, although there were still details to be worked out.

In February 2016, Hosler issued a rebuttal to a letter of reprimand, denying incidents of unprofessional conduct from the 2013-2014 school year as well as an incident in November 2015.

Concannon announced Friday via the Blanchester Wildcats United Facebook page: “I am honored to be representing Rick as I did in 2015. I plan to meet with Rick next week regarding strategy. Our strongest piece remains to be community support. I have never seen anything as effective and inspirational as that board meeting with about 1,200 passionate students, parents, staff and others.

“The one thing we need to concentrate totally on now is a HUGE turnout. I would like to meet with a small leadership group of 10 or so next week to talk specific ideas and strategies. It is important that our efforts are well coordinated, smart and legal.

“The Blan community got it done the last time in exemplary fashion for your great leader!”

Other supporters of Hosler are rallying the community to attend the May 15 meeting and to sign a petition in support of Hosler.

Concannon told the News Journal Monday that Hosler’s current contract ends this summer. He said they believe Hosler should continue as BHS principal.

“Hosler has been a fabulous leader as a high school principal. He is loved by the community, staff, families, and especially students,” said Concannon.

The next step for them, according to Concannon, all depends on what the school board decides at their May 15 meeting and what Hosler wants to do.

“His intention is to continue as principal,” said Concannon.
