Clinton County Voiture 992 awards nurses training scholarships

Sixteen members of American Legion Post 297 in Philadelphia envisioned La Societe des Quarante Hommes et Huit Chevaux — The 40& 8 — in March 1920. Originally referred to as the “Honor Society” of the American Legion, the organization remains an invitation only group of dedicated veterans devoted to veteran and community service.

Monetary support for the well=being of the people of the United States began in 1922 with the establishment of a child welfare project. In 1941 the organization began issuing Nurses Training Scholarships to deserving individuals willing to undergo formal training and make a career of that noble profession.

In 1946 an acute shortage of nurses came to the attention of our Voyageurs (members) and a Nurses Training Program was initiated at the Voiture Locale (local chapter) level. In 1955 Voiture Nationale formally established the current Nurses Training Program and as of September 2016, over $32 million has been awarded to assist 52,349 nurses.

The Nurses Training Program is primarily administered by the Voiture Locales and there are no fixed guidelines for either the number of scholarships or the dollar value of those awarded. Many Locales have established their own guidelines specifying the quantity and value of each scholarship.

Clinton County Voiture 992 has established $2,000 per scholarship for one nursing student per academic year as their annual goal.

The current program year will be an exception to the norm. The members raised the funds necessary to award two $2,000 scholarships for the 2017-18 academic year. This year’s recipients are Clinton-Massie senior Brooke Rose and Wilmington High School senior Averi Vance.

Brooke has been accepted to the Southern State Community College Nursing Program beginning this fall. Averi has been accepted in the Wright State University School of Nursing Honors Program.

Any Clinton County resident, either accepted for or enrolled in an accredited nursing program, is eligible to apply for the 2018-19 scholarship(s). To apply contact Paul Butler at [email protected].
