WASHINGTON C.H. — A 22-year-old woman has been indicted for involuntary manslaughter and a number of other felony charges for her alleged role in the overdose-related death of a Fayette County Jail inmate.

Following a lengthy investigation by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, a grand jury handed down an indictment Friday of Meesha Pettiford on charges of first-degree felony involuntary manslaughter, second-degree felony corrupting another with drugs, two counts of third-degree felony illegal conveyance of drugs into a detention facility, fifth-degree felony possession of cocaine, and fifth-degree felony aggravated possession of drugs.

On June 8, 2016, Pettiford allegedly smuggled drugs into the Fayette County Jail by hiding the drugs and a syringe inside a body cavity after she was arrested on an unrelated charge, according to Sheriff Vernon Stanforth.

Pettiford allegedly shared these drugs with other female inmates, resulting in the overdose of Tiara Adams, 22, who was revived by the use of Naloxone, a medication used to block the effects of opioids.

However, Pettiford had hid other drugs inside the jail that were obtained and consumed by Adams, resulting in another overdose on the afternoon of June 10. Deputies and Fayette County EMS personnel attempted to revive her and she was then transported to Fayette County Memorial Hospital.

From there, Adams was transferred to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center in Columbus where she died on June 13. The Franklin County Coroner’s Office determined her cause of death to be from “acute fentanyl and cocaine intoxication.”

Pettiford is being held in the Fayette County Jail pending her arraignment in the Fayette County Common Pleas Court on a $50,000 bond.
