BPD: Stolen fishing poles illustrate drug problems

BLANCHESTER — Police are seeking information on some stolen fishing poles likely stolen by someone with a drug addiction.

On Wednesday, May 10, Lucas Rayburn of West Fancy Street reported approximately 15 fishing poles were stolen from the front porch of his home. Rayburn and his young sons are fishing enthusiasts.

An officer spoke to neighbors, none of whom had seen anyone suspicious in the neighborhood, according to Police Chief Scott Reinbolt. An officer also checked with the second-hand stores in town to see if anyone had been trying to sell any fishing poles recently. No leads were developed.

“Late last week a resident found a few of the stolen fishing poles in the back yard of a church in the 200 block of East Fancy Street and called police, knowing that we had been looking for stolen poles,” said Reinbolt. “Based on the information we have developed, we believe the poles were stolen by someone with a drug addiction and were sold on the street for far under market value.

“If you recently purchased any fishing poles at a deep discount from anyone on the street around town, or know of anyone trying to sell fishing poles at a deep discount under suspicious circumstances, we would appreciate a call at the police station at 937-783-4702. We fully understand that anyone who purchased these poles most likely did so without knowing they were stolen.

“While this is certainly not a heinous crime, it is the kind of crime that directly impacts the peace of our community and the sense of security of our citizens,” he added. “We therefore work cases like this earnestly, and intend to do so with this case.”

Police say these fishing poles were recovered from among 15 stolen.
