A Greenfield man died Wednesday afternoon from injuries he received in a “freak accident” on SR 28 east of Greenfield.

Jeffery Calhoun, 56, was pronounced dead at Adena Greenfield Medical Center from injuries he sustained after being struck with a wheel that came off a homemade trailer, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Calhoun was riding in the passenger seat of a red Honda CR-V driven by Walter Staup, 55, Bourneville, headed eastbound on SR 28, according to the release.

The two had just crossed the Ross County line when an eastbound home-made trailer being pulled by a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe lost its rear left wheel, which struck a westbound silver car before flying through the windshield of the Honda, according to the release.

The wheel directly struck Calhoun and hit Staup’s arm, according to the release.

According to the release, the Tahoe was driven by Zachariah L. Lyons, 29, Greenfield. Lt. Tim Karwatske of the OSHP Chillicothe Post told The Times-Gazette that Lyons left the scene, but was located at his residence a short time later.

Karwatske said he couldn’t speculate on whether Lyons will face charges, but once the investigation is complete all the information will be submitted to the Ross County prosecutor.

Calhoun sustained “substantial head and neck trauma,” according to Paint Creek Joint Fire/EMS District Chief Bradley George. George said first responders did not immediately find a pulse on initial examination, but later detected a faint one.

The release states Staup was uninjured, although he asked to be taken to the hospital while on the scene.

The silver car fled the scene, according to the release.

George described the incident as a “freak accident.”

Troopers with the Chillicothe Post of the OSHP responded to the scene with emergency responders from the Greenfield Police Department and Paint Creek.

Authorities are still investigating the matter.
