Scouts work on Blanchester recycling

The Recycling & Litter Prevention office of the Clinton County Solid Waste District recently partnered with three local Girl Scouts to help satisfy service hours required for the Girl Scouts Silver Award.

The Silver Award is the second highest award of the Girl Scouts of the USA, and the highest award that a Girl Scout Cadette can earn.

Rebekah Davenport, Bethany Fessler and Hannah Gabbard from Troop 30610 approached Dori Bishop, Education Specialist at the Solid Waste District, asking for ideas of what they could do to help improve the recycling program in Blanchester.

Together, they set up a plan to reach out to the Blanchester area residents to educate about the proper materials accepted in the public recycling drop-off program.

On two days in June, these three scouts, their leaders and staff from the Recycling & Litter Prevention Office set up a station at the drop-off recycling site located in the parking lot of the Kroger store in Blanchester.

The scouts assisted public members as they arrived with their recyclables. The scouts did a quick sort of the materials being dropped off, and gave explanations if any wrong materials were included with the recyclables. All public members received some recycled-content items and information listing the proper recyclables for this drop-off program.

Jeff Walls, Coordinator for the Solid Waste District, said, “The timing for this service project is perfect. We are experiencing too much contamination in the recycling program, and have had conversations with the mayor to consider a curbside recycling program within the village.”

The Solid Waste District also recently conducted a survey in the village of Blanchester to gauge the interest in a curbside recycling program.
