State Sen. Bob Peterson hears about proposed Blanchester Pool and Rec Center

WILMINGTON — When State Sen. Bob Peterson (R-District 17) came here Monday regarding Ohio’s 2018 Capital Budget, county commissioners talked up a proposed Blanchester Pool and Recreation Center project.

Moreover, two members of the pool project board attended Peterson’s appointment at the commissioners office.

The State of Ohio’s biennial Capital Budget is enacted in each even-numbered year. While it provides appropriations for the repair, reconstruction and construction of capital assets of state agencies, colleges, universities and school districts, funds also may be allocated for community projects of local or regional interest, according to the Ohio Office of Budget and Management website.

Clinton County Commissioner Patrick Haley said he is very supportive of the pool and recreation center project, citing its potential impact on people in the region. He added there is “broad public support” in the Blanchester area for such a facility.

Clinton County Commissioner Brenda K. Woods said she is very excited about the project, adding she thinks its leaders have already put in a lot of work and energy in hopes of creating something very nice for the community.

Pool project committee Chairperson Erin Whitaker said the momentum in the past month in terms of public interest has been “overwhelming” in the aftermath of presentations at the Blanchester Area Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting and a November appointment with commissioners.

Clinton County Commissioners President Kerry R. Steed also is enthusiastic about the proposal for a Pool and Recreation Center. Both he and Woods on Monday also mentioned or asked about other possible ideas that may qualify for the state’s Capital Budget consideration.

One of those Steed mentioned is the situation in Port William where residents rely on private wells for water and private septic tanks for the sewage function. Steed brought up the prospect of including the existing commercial area located at the Interstate 71 and U.S. 68 interchange in a public sewer system, something he said would also serve to promote economic development there.

In addition, Steed said the sheriff’s office has raised the idea of a regional Emergency Operations Center (EOC) or training facility, and linking that with the Clinton County Emergency Management Agency (EMA).

Peterson said more than 40 projects have been brought to his attention from throughout his Ohio Senate district prior to his meeting with the Clinton County commissioners.
