Celebrate veterans’ honor guard’s new ride

WILMINGTON — June 2016 marked the beginning of a journey for the members of the Wilmington Veterans (American Legion) Post 49 Honor Guard. A check for $7,500 from The ADECO Group, Columbus, was presented to the “Squad” for the purpose of repairing their aging bus.

To celebrate the recent arrival of the new bus, the Honor Guard will be hosting an open house on Sunday, June 24 from 2-4 p.m. at the American Legion Post 49, 140 E. Locust St., Wilmington. The bus will be available for public inspection and members of the Post 49 Honor Guard will be on hand to answer questions.

Light snacks, courtesy of Ladies Auxiliary Unit 49, will also be offered.

Back in 2016 a committee was formed, decisions were made and the community got involved.

After a 12-month fundraising campaign and a seven-month production schedule, a brand new bus was unveiled at the 2018 Memorial Day parade.

The Honor Guard uses the bus as its sole source of transportation to the more than 70 funerals, flag presentations, patriotic holiday functions and parades in which they participate annually.

“The new bus was only made possible by the generosity of the Post 49 Legion Family, the residents and the businesses in our community,” said Honor Guard Commander Mike Sutton.

The Legion family and the community came together to allow the Honor Guard to purchase the new bus, which will be celebrated at the Sunday event.
