1,000 Bibles bought — to give away

WILMINGTON — “Thirty-seven years in the Christian bookstore business in Wilmington, and I can still be surprised by what God brings through the door,” said owner Ron Merkle.

A few weeks ago, a local businessman visited the Christian Bookstore in Wilmington and said he wanted to purchase 2,000 Bibles.

“After I picked myself up off the floor, I showed him several ‘less expensive’ paperback Bibles, and he said he would prefer something a little nicer that folks might be more inclined to keep for years to come,” said Merkle.

The two decided on the New Kings James Version Bible, and to lower the purchase number to 1,000.

Merkle asked what the customer wanted to do with them — the man said he wanted Merkle to give them away.

Now through August — or while supplies last — the store, located at 1643 Rombach Ave., is giving a Bible to anyone who wants one.

“If you have a Bible but would be willing to pass the free Bible on to someone who may need it, then we’d like you to take one and pass it on,” he said.

The first one he gave out was to the truck driver who delivered them to the store.

“He said he had been thinking about going back to church and didn’t know where his old one was,” said Merkle. “He has one now.”

One Bible will be given out per customer. No purchase is required.
