CINCINNATI (AP) — An effort to arrest the suspect in a violent robbery in Ohio ended with the man’s death and an officer wounded in gunfire that erupted in a dramatic scene captured by police body-worn cameras.

Cincinnati Police Chief Eliot Isaac said the weapon the suspect pulled Friday from his rear waistband that touched off volleys of gunfire from the officers turned out to be a steel pellet gun. The wounded officer was shot during his fellow officers’ gunfire. He underwent surgery for an arm wound and remained hospitalized Monday.

Isaac says 20-year-old James Clay had a history of mental health issues and of crimes. He was wanted for a mobile-phone store robbery earlier in the week in which store surveillance video showed the store clerk being thrown down and punched repeatedly.
