Clinton County eateries inspected

WILMINGTON — The following information is obtained from the Clinton County Health Department and is compiled from inspection reports.

Violations are either critical or non-critical. Critical violations are more likely to contribute to food contamination, illness or an environmental health hazard, including inadequate cooking of food items or poor personal hygiene.

The following restaurants or food service establishments were inspected recently and violations/comments include:

• Gold Star Chili, 942 Cherry St., Sept. 12. Critical: Cloth towels found stored in two hand sinks. Air gap missing on soda drain lines at drain. Several containers of food (beans, turkey, ham, cheese, hot dogs, bacon, cups of salsa, etc.) were missing date marks. Sour cream 43°F, diced chicken 44°F on top of Continental under counter cooler. Dirty spoon fond stored in container used for milk shake serving. Black/pink residues observed on guard on ice machine. Rust accumulated on edge and screws in ice machine. Sprayer at 3-sink is too long and hangs down in sink. Containers of raw beef found stored on top shelf of cart.

Wet cloths stored on counter; need to be stored in sanitizer solution. Container storing bacon was cracked. Clean food containers on storage shelf cracked (damaged). Grease accumulated between griddle and fryer. Grease and food debris accumulated on floor under cooking equipment. Under-counter freezer door falls off when opening unit. Handle on unit is damaged (sharp metal). Microwaves are not commercial or NSF (or similar) certified. Area below soda fountain machine in cabinet has water accumulation. Continental under-counter cooler has packaging tape on door; cannot open door; taped shut. Door will fall off if opened. Cheese, other food debris and mold-like accumulations on top of Continental under-counter cooler. Cove mold missing/damaged at steam table, dry stock room, warewash area. Dust accumulated on ceiling tiles, light fixtures and HVAC vent covers throughout kitchen and service area. Rusty screws on lid that cover buns/sausage links at steam table. Black & Decker toaster used; must be commercial and NSF (or similar) rated. Board damaged (not smooth/easy to clean) at mix machine. Hammer (maintenance tool) stored on soda bag in box. Rusty screws/surface on icemaking machine. Exterior lid of ice machine has black/brown residues. Ice buckets are cracked, chipped, damaged. Tray that ice buckets are stored on has food debris accumulations. Shelf above 3-sink is rusty. Shelf storing clean containers and chemicals are rusty. Light bulb nonworking in ceiling fixtures near warewash machine and dry stock room. Shield on light fixture above warewash machine is missing. Light bulbs nonworking in vent hood above tilt skillets. (Is vent hood functional?) Rust accumulated on vent hood. Aloe vera found on shelf above prep table. Skillets with food debris stored on dry stock storage shelf. Food debris accumulated on floor under dry stock shelves and behind hot water heater. Container missing label storing bulk flour. Container has debris accumulations storing bulk flour. Shelves and walls in cooler have debris accumulations (rust?) and black mold-like accumulations. Found debris/paper/plastic accumulated on floor of walk-in freezer. Box of cookies stored on floor in walk-in cooler. Grout worn, water/food debris holding in floor tiles at warewash area. Ground near grease dumpster has evidence of grease spillage. Food handler’s hair was not restrained. Trash can with lid is missing in women’s restroom for proper disposal of sanitary napkins. Men’s restroom door does not self-close.

Follow-up: To be determined; dependent on remodel scheduled to start in October.

• Save-A-Lot, 127 S. Broadway St., Blanchester, Sept. 12. Follow-up. Seven previous violations corrected. Main walk-in freezer door is damaged. Has ice build-up and excess water on floor. Main walk-in freezer condenser unit has heavy ice accumulations. Metal panel bent/cove trim damaged in meat dept. walk-in cooler. Faucet in hand sink in women’s restroom deteriorating (needs replaced). Ice accumulation on pipes near panel/mechanical area. Ice accumulated at bottom of sales floor retail freezers.

Follow-up: Oct. 10.

• American Showa, 3343 SR 28, Blanchester, Sept. 12. At arrival facility employee stated the kitchen has closed (since end of July). All equipment is still in place. Equipment is scheduled for removal.

• Eagles Lodge #2222, 113 Wright St., Blanchester, Sept. 12. Level 2 certification unavailable. Popcorn maker and scoop had popcorn residues.
