Judge says Ohio suburb owes residents $13 million tax refund

GAHANNA, Ohio (AP) — A judge has ordered a suburb of Ohio’s capital to repay $13.2 million for income tax overpayments collected from thousands of residents over several years.

The Columbus suburb of Gahanna isn’t disputing the calculated total in Wednesday’s ruling by a Franklin County judge, but a city spokeswoman says it plans to appeal other issues in the case.

It’s the latest development in a yearslong legal saga over the local tax code and overpayments by residents who worked outside of Gahanna and paid income taxes elsewhere.

The case involves taxes from 2008 to 2014 and affects more than 17,600 residents. A county judge concluded they should be refunded more than $10.8 million, plus more than $2.4 million in interest, penalties and legal fees.
