News Journal newspaper carrier Darrell Tucker was awarded the statewide honor Carrier of the Year at the recent annual Ohio News Media Association (ONMA) convention in Columbus.

He has been a News Journal carrier since September 2014.

“Darrell is a great carrier,” said News Journal Circulation Manager Dawn Gunkel. “He shows up to get his papers every day regardless of what the weather is and without a complaint. Darrell usually has a smile on his face as he comes in to greet me and the other carriers in the morning.

“When Darrell came in with a handful of recommendation letters, how could you not nominate him? It’s a well-deserved honor.”

Nominations for Carrier of the Year are evaluated and judged on criteria including customer service essay questions, personal and community service activity, references, and the circulation manager’s explanation of why they chose to nominate the carrier.

The Carrier of the Year Achievement Awards Program was established in 1952 to honor newspaper carriers throughout Ohio.

Winners receive a cash award of $1,000 and a plaque of recognition, and the nominating newspaper also receives a plaque.
