COLUMBUS (AP) — Police in Ohio’s capital say an officer conducting surveillance has been shot and three suspects are in custody.

Columbus police say the officer notified a dispatcher he’d been shot around 11 p.m. Thursday and was able to give responding officers a description of the male suspect who wounded him and the vehicle he fled the scene in.

Police in suburban Whitehall stopped the vehicle, and police say three people were taken into custody. Police say a firearm was recovered from inside the vehicle.

The officer was hospitalized in stable condition.

WBNS-TV in Columbus reports the wounded officer was in plainclothes and the suspects realized he was following them.

The names of the officer and suspects haven’t been released. A message was left Friday for Columbus police.
