Ohio’s dry, but flood of local events set

0

It looks like the heat will be with us for a few more days than some relief next week if the weather predictions hold true. Fortunately for much of Clinton County we have gotten some rain in the past week but rainfall amounts have varied throughout the county.

That is not true for all parts of Ohio. There are several areas of the state now that are considered to be impacted moderately too severely by the drought. I have even heard of some reports in certain counties they do not expect yields to be much more than 50 to 60 bushels for corn per acre this fall. In talking with folks in many Midwestern states, Ohio appears to be the worse for crop conditions and the effects of the drought.

Next Tuesday, Aug. 16 is the annual SW Ohio Corn Growers Field Day to be held at the Fayette County demonstration farm located at 2770 SR 38 in Washington Court House. This is always a great opportunity to get some cutting edge information as it relates to corn and soybean production. This year we have a great set of speakers lined up to cover a number of topics.

The in the field speakers and topics will begin at 9:30 a.m. They will include:

Dr Erdal Ozkan, Ohio state University discussing Spray Tip Selection. He will follow this discussing with Sprayer Management and an in-field demonstration. Jay Brandt of Walnut Creek Seeds will discuss Cover Crop Establishment and Utilization. Tim Norris, CEO of Norris Ag Info Tech will discuss Variable Rate Nutrient Management, and Dow Agro-Sciences LLC will have a demonstration plot and discuss the latest development for Enlist.

The keynote speaker at lunch time will be Gary Schnitkey, University of Illinois where he will discuss the Farm Outlook for the remainder of 2016 and into 2017. We will also have an update from the Ohio Corn Growers Association from OCGA Executive Director, Tadd Nicholson.

After lunch there will be a Precision Ag. Technology session presented by Andy Klopfenstein, Ohio State University and Tim Norris, Ag Info Tech. They will be discussing Variable Rate Technology, Aerial Mapping, Nitrogen Sensors and more.

Don’t forget there is also a great lineup of equipment on display and several other Agriculture Industry related vendors on hand as well. Plane rides are available by scheduling with the Fayette County Airport at 740-335-2430. Cost is $30 per person for 30 minutes. Health screenings are also available. CCA credits are available after attending educational sessions throughout the day.

A few other events to put on your calendar include the Clinton County Soil and Water Conservation District (CSWCD) annual meeting, Annual Clinton County Farm Bureau meeting and the Annual Ag Tire Recycling day.

The CSWCD meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 24 beginning at 5:30 p.m. and will be held at the Clinton county Fairgrounds in the Expo Center. This year Clinton County Soil and Water District will be teaming up with the Clinton County Farm Bureau to hold their annual meetings jointly.

This informal meeting will begin with the election of supervisors; dinner will follow at 6 p.m. The cost is $10 per person and reservations can be made by calling the 937-382-2461, ext. 101.

Finally, the Agriculture Tire Recycling day is set for Saturday, Sept. 17 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Clinton County Engineers office at 1326 Fife Ave. in Wilmington. This event is sponsored by the Clinton Soil and Water Conservation District, Clinton County Engineers, Clinton County Solid Waste Management District and is funded by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

This event is for Clinton County residents, farmers, municipalities, and townships only. All tires must be off the rim. It is a first come first serve event. There is a fee to participants to recycle tires. $1.50 for semi/large truck tires 17”-36”, $5 for regular size tractor tires, and $10 for large tractor tires larger than 60”.

Prior to Sept. 12, 2016, participants must register at the Clinton SWCD office at 111 S. Nelson Ave. in Wilmington. You will register the number of tires you have for the event, you will set up a drop off time and you will make payment for this service at this time.

It is important to understand no tires will be accepted from junk yards, garages, auto repair shops, tire dealerships, truck and farm-equipment dealerships or motor cycle shop and/or dealerships.

This program reminds those participating that tires hauled to this event must be secured and tarped unless hauled in an enclosed vehicle. For more information contact the Clinton SWCD at 937-382-2461.
