Keep tax money here for our seniors

Regarding the renewal of the Senior Services Levy, I am all for helping seniors in Clinton County to keep them in their homes and living independently. I have spent most of my life supporting and working with seniors in our county and will continue giving them my support.

However, in 2014 the Council on Aging cancelled the contract with the CCCA and several seniors receiving services had those services terminated. Most of voters in our county don’t realize tax dollars generated through this levy are administered by Hamilton County through a contract with Clinton County commissioners. Our tax money is to be used for Clinton County, not Hamilton. They estimate a surplus of $821,000 left from this program year. This money should be used for our elderly and not staff and providers from other counties. They have an office in Wilmington but are only there three days a week and have no local phone number. Seniors and their families have to call the toll-free call center and most times don’t get a call back in a timely manner.

When Community Action had the program, there was always a case manager available to answer questions and give an immediate response to senior and their families.

We need to keep all of our tax dollars intended for seniors in Clinton County. We need to talk to county commissioners to stop our money from going to Hamilton County. As a taxpayer, I cannot support this levy until commissioners resolve this problem.
