Clinton-Massie’s 4-15 record might be a bit deceiving.

In Hilma Crawford’s first season as head coach of the CMHS girls basketball team, the Lady Falcons had losses of 1, 3, 2, 4, 5, 4, 9, 11, 1 and 4 points.

Massie was 3-7 in the SBAAC American Division.

Crawford and company will have a new look as there were nine 2021 graduates on the team, including Holland Jaramillo, Alex Pence, Avery Cranmer, Miranda Crawford, Luci Payne, Hannah Bowman, McKenzie Avery, Nora Voisey and Kennedy Thompson. In addition, juniors Aidan Eades and Sydney Crowe are not returning this season.

Avery (8.6 ppg, 8.2 reb, 2.4 reb) was first team All-SBAAC while Crawford (7.8 ppg, 2.7 stls) was second team. McKenna Branham was given honorable mention last season as a sophomore.

Branham, who is coming back after a knee injury in the post-season tournament, and Maddie Phipps are the top returning players.

Other returning players are Ashley Doyle, Hannah Bowman, Hope Roberts, Madi Bayless, Alex Pence, Natalee Hillman and Morgan Riggers.

Crawford’s coaching staff includes Brian Conley, varsity assistant; Mary Moyer, varsity assistant and JV head coach; Justin Phipps, varsity volunteer; Brianna Machado, eighth grade coach; Hannah Doss, seventh grade coach; Patience Chowning, volunteer; and Johanna Theetge, volunteer.

Branham and Phipps, both junior captains, are the leaders of “this young, talented team,” Crawford said.

Given the youth on this squad, Crawford said team chemistry must grow as practices are held and games contested. He likes the willingness to learn of this group.

Contending for an American Division title is not out of the question if “we come together as a team, play hard at all times and take care of the ball,” the coach said.
