After tearing her ACL in December of last season, Sophie Huffman returns to the Wilmington High School girls basketball team.

The young Hurricane grew up last season, playing all but seven games without Huffman, who was the leader and point guard.

Huffman is a strong defender and great distributor of the basketball, recording seven or more assists in four of her seven games.

Wilmington was 9-9 last season, and finished at 6-3 in the SBAAC American Division. WHS was runnerup to unbeaten American champion Western Brown.

Zach Williams is in his sixth season as head coach with a 73-39 record. He will be assisted by Doug Cooper at the varsity level. Dennis Nance is the JV coach, Judah Jamiel the eighth grade coach and Randall Davis the seventh grade coach.

Katie Murphy was the top offensive threat for WHS a year ago, averaging 15.6 points and earning first team All-SBAAC honors.

Maura Drake, the top post player on the team, was first team all-league but graduated, as did Chailyn Johns who was second team.

Aside from Murphy and Huffman, top returning players include Taylor Noszka and KeAsia Robinson. In all six letterwinners return for WHS, with four of them starters.

Newcomers to note, Williams said, are Madison Schuster, Elle Martin and Jada Current.

Williams said the junior class has taken on leadership of the team. There are no seniors on the WHS varsity roster.

Williams said, “I really like the dynamic of this team and the energy they bring in the gym. His squad can contend for the league’s top honor if “we truly come together and play with the energy and tenacity that we can play with.”
