Slow start dooms Massie girls in 45-36 defeat

OWENSVILLE — A slow start doomed Clinton-Massie’s girls Saturday in a 45-36 loss to Clermont Northeastern.

Massie trailed 16-8 after one quarter.

“Girls just had a hard time getting going,” CM coach Hilma Crawford said. “Gotta come to play hard every day or anything can happen and (Saturday) CNE just wanted it more.”

Massie falls to 5-7 with the loss. The Rockets go to 6-4.

Maddie Phipps poured in a pair of three-pointers in both the second and third quarters and led the Falcons with 12 points. Alex Pence had 10 points, with seven of those in the final quarter.

After the Falcons rallied with 21-19 at halftime, Clermont NE pushed the difference back to 34-26 after three. Reagan Beverly had seven of her 13 in the third period.

Piper Ritter led CNE with 15 points.

“They beat us to every lose ball and just out-hustled us,” Crawford added. “We will get that fixed. We have to have a short memory because we have a lot of basketball to be played.”

The Clinton-Massie junior varsity girls were 36-22 winners, pushing their record to 6-2 on the year. Emma Redman led the offense with 12 points.
