Hurricane baseball wins big over Wolverines

WILMINGTON — Ending a winless streak in resounding fashion, Wilmington defeated Dayton Dunbar 39-1 Wednesday in non-league baseball at WHS.

Wilmington’s last regular season win came in April, 2019. The last win overall was a tournament win in May, 2019.

The Hurricane puts this one to rest early, scoring 21 runs in the first inning. They came back with 17 runs in the third inning.

WHS had 24 hits.

Braden Harmeling pitched the first three innings for the win. Alex Massie closed the game with four strikeouts in two innings.

Jake Stephens, WHS freshman, scored five runs, drove in four runs and reached base four times via base on balls.

Cole Fickert had three hits and scored four runs. Sam Nichols drove in four teammates as did Josh Tolliver.

Fourteen Hurricane players had hits in the game while all 16 who played were able to score a run.

WHS reached base six times on hit by pitch, with Keenan Milliner reaching twice.
