WC equine program ends National drought

HARRISBURG, Pa. — The Wilmington College equestrian team concluded the final day of the Intercollegiate Horse Shows Association Sunday.

On Sunday, both Brooke Pitts and Ashley Howard represented the Fightin’ Quakers by riding in the prestigious show. Pitts, in the Level I Division, placed fourth while Howard, in the Rookie Division, finished 10th.

On Thursday, Ciara Lawson led off the weekend with a seventh-place finish in the Open Division.

“We had a great showing at the Nationals this week,” said Daren Wright, director of the college’s equine program and professor of equine business. “By qualifying and showing at the Nationals, it puts a rider in the top 0.4 percent of the country.”

It is believed that only two previous WC riders have ever qualified for the nationals. Lawson, Howard and Pitts are the first Quakers to advance to that stage in more than a decade.
