Lending a hand when real life interrupts a rivalry

As an athlete and coach at both Clinton-Massie and Blanchester schools, Hilma Crawford has enjoyed beating Goshen athletics teams over the years, whether it be football or basketball.

But when the Goshen area was hit by a tornado earlier this month, all that rivalry stuff was quickly put aside.

“Not the biggest Goshen fan but I told the girls we needed to do something,” said Crawford, varsity head coach of the Clinton-Massie girls basketball program.

So players, parents and coaches loaded vehicles with food and drink and headed south to lend a hand to their SBAAC counterparts.

“This is real life,” Crawford said. “Courts and fields mean nothing when it comes to this.”

Clinton-Massie seniors Aidan Eades, McKenna Branham and Maddie Phipps led the way in the aftermath of the July 6 weather disaster that damaged an estimated 200 structures.

“Pretty awesome … it’s amazing how people come together in times of need,” said Crawford.
