ROB volleyball completes 3 matches in 4 days

The Rodger O. Borror Middle School volleyball team completed its first week of competition, playing three matches in four days.

This past weekend, Wilmington played Washington Junior High School.

The seventh grade was victorious 25-15, 25-18. Wilmington was led in serving by Jo’Lese Harpen, Kaelyn Brooks and Haley Ilg. Ava Mann, Makayla Engram and Alysse Stewart led the Lady Hurricane offense in kills. Gabrielle Wilson, Mileigh Hollingsworth and Alayna Klontz provided great serve receive and defensive passing.

The eighth grade also won 25-2, 25-17. Allie Martin served 22 straight points in the first set to lead the Lady ‘Cane to victory. Martin, Sydney Lagasse, Miya Nance, Taryn Allen and Kierra Cole combined for 18 service aces. On offense, Auna Hudson, Nance, Martin, Cole, and Allen totaled seven kills. Allen and Nance contributed six set assists. The Lady ‘Cane had great serve receive passing from Lagasse, Morgan Mertz, Kyliee Cole and Chante Lopez. Lopez, Kyliee Cole, Kierra Cole, Lagasse and Nance led the defense with eight digs.

On Monday, Wilmington played Western Brown.

The 7th grade Lady ‘Cane played well but fell short, 28-26, 11-25, 23-25. Harpen, Brooks, and Ilg once again led the team in service points. Offensively, Wilmington collected six kills thanks to the net play of Mann, Engram, Stewart, and Brooks. Harpen, Ilg and Alayna Klontz collected six set assists. On defense, Brooks, Hollingsworth, Wilson, Harpen and Mann showed solid passing.

In 8th grade action, Wilmington lost a hard fought match, 18-25, 25-12, 21-25.

Leading Wilmington in service points, Nance, Martin, Allen, and Lopez tallied eight aces. Setters Nance and Allen combined for 13 assists. Hudson, Martin, Nance, Allen, Lopez and Kierra Cole had big performances at the net with a total of 13 kills. Sydney Lagasse, Kyliee Cole, Morgan Mertz, Nance, Kierra Cole and Lopez played great defense with 14 total digs.

On Tuesday, Wilmington faced East Clinton.

The 7th grade Lady Cane defeated East Clinton 25-19, 23-25, 25-10.

Ilg, Engram, Harpen, Mann and Brooks led in serving points and tallied 20 aces. The Lady ‘Cane had a combined 10 kills from Wilson, Mann, Engram, Harpen and Brooks. Klontz, Ilg and Harpen had seven assists total. Defensively, Stewart, Hollingsworth, Harpen, Brooks and Mann displayed great passing with 10 digs.

The 8th grade Lady Cane defeated East Clinton 25-11, 25-6.

Lagasse, Kierra Cole, Allen and Martin were the top servers with nine total aces. Nance, Lopez, Hudson, Allen and Martin had a great evening at the net, recording 16 kills. Setting assists came from Lopez, Kierra Cole, Martin, Nance, Allen, and Mertz with a total of 13. The Lady ‘Cane demonstrated great passing and defensive skills. Lagasse, Kyliee Cole, Kierra Cole, Lopez, Nance and Allen combined for nine team digs.

Overall, the Wilmington Middle School 7th grade team is 3-3 on the season and the 8th grade is 5-1 on the season.
