HILLSBORO — East Clinton’s fourth quarter defense held Hillsboro in check Wednesday for a 53-36 win in non-league girls basketball.

The Astros led 38-28 after three periods but then outscored the Indians 15-8 in the final quarter thanks to a solid defensive effort.

Libby Evanshine, who had a game-high 16 rebounds, had five of her season-low nine points in the fourth. Hillsboro aided the EC cause by making 6 of 16 free throws for the game, including 2 of 8 in the final quarter.

East Clinton is 10-1 on the year. Hillsboro is 2-12.

Jordan Collom had 14 points, five rebounds, six assists, two blocked shots and took the only charge of the game for the Astros.

Kami Whiteaker led the EC offense with 16 points, 11 coming in the second half.

The Astros led the whole way but were never comfortable against a scrappy Indians team.

Blake Herdman had 12 points for Hillsboro while Kyra Boyd added 10. Both players made a trio of three-pointers.
