NFL to install turf field where league’s first game played

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) — The NFL says its nonprofit NFL Foundation will fund construction of an artificial turf field in Ohio to honor the site where the league’s first game was played.

A National Football League release this week said the foundation will finance the field at Triangle Park in Dayton to commemorate the game played there by the Dayton Triangles and the Columbus Panhandles on Oct. 3, 1920. The Triangles won 14-0.

The Dayton Daily News reports the field should be complete by the time the Cincinnati Bengals help kick off the league’s 100th season with a practice at Triangle Park in late summer.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley told the newspaper the donated field will leave a “lasting impact” on the community.

The foundation also plans donations to support local youth football programs.
