LEES CREEK — The East Clinton varsity girls basketball team defeated Adena 41-33 in non-league action Dec. 21

The Lady Astros, now 2-9 on the year, had a balanced scoring attack led by Lacey Peterman’s 13 points. She also had 4 rebounds.

Paige Lilly had 8 points and 3 rebounds while Sam Gaddis had 6 points and 3 rebounds. Bre Davis chipped in 4 points and 4 rebounds in her return to the lineup after missing 5 games, coach Steven Gerber said.

Marissa Williams, Ciarra Cooper, Allison Tong, Kayla Hall and Kaitlin Durbin had 2 points each.

“This was one of our more complete games on both ends,” Gerber said. “The girls did an excellent job on the defensive end shutting them down,”

Coach Gerber credited assistant coach Jeff Craycraft with a strong defensive game plan.

“Coach Craycraft put together a nice defensive game plan and the girls executed it nicely,” said Gerber. “Offensively the girls did a better job of taking care of the ball and did a good job of taking advantage of the mismatches and executing the game plan we put in place.”

East Clinton raced out to a 7-0 lead but the Warriors battled back to take a 10-9 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Gerber said an injury to Cooper, a senior captain and starter for the Lady Astros, “took the wind out of our sails for a few minutes.”

EC rallied to take a 23-20 lead at halftime then pushed the difference to 33-28 at the end of the third quarter.

“We had to battle through another injury to a starter (Kaitlin Durbin),” Gerber said. “The girls did an excellent job of stepping up when the injuries occurred.”

East Clinton held Adena to just 5 points in the final quarter.
