Falcons hold off Titans

OWENSVILLE – Clinton-Massie will play for its second straight Clermont Northeastern Boys Holiday Classic crown after knocking off St. Bernard 58-43 in the first semifinal Monday.

The Falcons (3-5) will play Batavia at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Bailey LeForge led the Falcons with 16 points. He also dished out five assists. Teammate Noah Greathouse joined LeForge in double figures with 11 points.

The Titans had two in double figures, Tre Holmes with 11 and Anthony Harrison with 10.

Massie led the entire way, only having to thwart two St. Bernard threats.

The first came in the second quarter when the Titans got within two of the Falcons and had four chances to tie or pull ahead. The Falcons turned away the threat by scoring nine of the first half’s last 11 points to take a 26-17 into the break.

“At the start of the second quarter, we got ‘shot happy,’” CM head coach Dustin Eads said. “When we got aggressive and attacked the rim, we got easy shots.”

St. Bernard’s second threat came when it opened the final period with an 11-2 flurry to cut Massie’s lead from 47-30 to 49-41 with 2:43 left in the contest. Massie answered that and put the game away with eight straight points.

“We let them get in our heads and frustrate us. It made it a lot more challenging. We missed some bunny shots down low. When you get frustrated, you don’t make good decisions, and that showed in the fourth quarter,” Eads said. “I’m glad the guys fought through foul trouble, turnovers and offensive woes, and found a way to win. Any win we can get right now is important for us, because we’re young and we’re still learning.”
