LEES CREEK – Freshman Jaden Singleton drove in classmate Isaiah Curtis with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning Tuesday as East Clinton defeated Clark Montessori 7-6 in a Division III Cincinnati Sectional game at ECHS.

East Clinton, 7-13 on the year, will play at No. 1 seed Cincinnati Country Day 5 p.m. Wednesday in the second round.

The Astros trailed 5-0 after two innings. Matt Mitchell drove in two runs in the third before Clark Montessori added a run in the fourth, 6-2.

Mitchell Bean, another freshman, knocked in a pair in the fourth then EC tied it in the fifth when Tristan Burkitt tripled home Matt Mitchell and Austin Arellano hit a sacrifice fly.

“We continued to chip away with timely hitting,” EC coach Brian Carey said. “I’m very proud of the fight I saw tonight.”

In the top of the seventh, Clark Montessori put two runners on with one out. But Colton Vadnais and Matt Mitchell executed a strike-out, throw-out double play to end the inning. Mitchell threw out a would-be base stealer at third.

Vadnais worked out of a two-on jam in the top of the eighth to keep the game tied at 6-6.

In the bottom of the eighth, Curtis started things with a single. After a passed ball put Curtis on second, Bean and Matthew Horn walked to load the bases. Singleton came up and drove in the game-winner.

Horn took over on the mound in the second and pitched five innings to allow EC to get back in the game.

“Three freshmen led us to this victory,” said Carey. “Proud of the them for stepping up when we needed them.”
