Santoro powers Lady Falcons to 73-37 win

ADAMS TOWNSHIP – Two girls basketball players shined during Clinton-Massie 73-37 victory Wednesday over Hillsboro. One for another stellar night, and another for a career milestone.

Hillsboro’s Madison Snyder eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for her career with a free throw in the third quarter. She finished the night with 19 points and 1,003 for her career.

“Madison Snyder has earned that through hard work and consistency over four years of playing,” Hillsboro head coach JR Moberly said. “You always got the same effort out of Madison, night in and night out.”

Snyder’s milestone moment gave way to an exceptional performance by Clinton-Massie standout Miquela Santoro.

Santoro followed a good first half with a ridiculous 11 minutes to open the second half. She scored 20 points in those 11 minutes on 7 of 13 from the floor and 5 of 7 from three.

She filled the stat line for the night: 30 points, 9 steals, 6 assists, 4 rebounds.

“She’s very special,” CM head coach Carlos Roberts said. “The thing about her is she’s so unselfish. You say, ‘Miquela, you’ve got to shoot the ball.’ (She says) ‘I don’t want to be a ball hog.’

“She gets everybody involved and still does her thing. She’s been a joy.”

Hillsboro held Clinton-Massie scoreless for the first 3:42 of the game, and only trailed 11-8 at the end of the first quarter.

“We’ve been playing a little sluggish lately,” Roberts said. “Getting off slow like that, especially when we work and work not to do that, then we come out and do that, makes you pretty angry.”

While Roberts was frustrated with Massie’s start, Moberly was pleased with how his young team played in the first quarter.

“I thought we had a nice first quarter against them,” Moberly said. “But again, the second and third quarters, both times we’ve played them this year … I don’t know if they missed a shot.”

The middle two quarters decided the outcome. Clinton-Massie outshot Hillsboro 47-22 in the second and third quarters. Massie shot 52.8 percent in those quarters overall, including 8/15 from three-point range.

In addition to Santoro’s 30 points, Madison Purkey added 13 points for the Lady Falcons (13-3 overall, 7-3 in SCOL).

Other than Snyder’s 19, Hanna Breeden added 6 points for the Lady Indians (1-14, 1-9). Freshman Kristin Jamieson, listed a 5-2 on the roster, led Hillsboro in rebounds with 8.

Clinton-Massie returns to the SCOL gauntlet next week with three conference games in four days. Home games with Wilmington and Washington surround a road trip to Chillicothe.

“We’ve got a beast of a week coming up,” Roberts said. “We’ve got to be ready. It’s a matter of going out and playing better than what we are right now. We’ve got to pick it up and go.”

Despite the defeat, the night focused on Snyder, who is only one of three seniors on a Hillsboro team that dresses six sophomores and three freshmen on varsity.

Moberly said Snyder has been the perfect guide for his young players.

“There have been times she couldn’t lift her arm,” Moberly said. “There were times she couldn’t stand on one foot, but she would find a way to get out there and compete.

“She’s been super. She’s a perfect example of a role model. All they have to do is look and watch her work every day and see the effort she puts in to understand what it takes to be a good basketball player.”
