GAMBIER — The Wilmington College men’s soccer team managed to score against nationally-ranked Kenyon College Tuesday but ultimately could not repel the Lords’ offense in a 2-1 loss.

The loss demotes the Fightin’ Quakers to 7-2-0 while the Lords improve to 8-1-0.

Wilmington played a very defensive first half against the No. 22 team in NCAA Division III. The Quakers allowed eight shots while only taking two of their own, but the game plan helped the Wilmington go to halftime tied with Kenyon.

The second half saw a more balanced approach from the Quakers and they were able to get more players in their offensive third of the field. In the 61st minute, the Quaker defense was called for a foul resulting in a Lords penalty kick which was scored by Scott Upton.

The Quakers reacted well with putting even more pressure on the Lords defense and in the 72nd minute Nati Wallis intercepted a weak pass to the Kenyon goalkeeper which resulted in a goal.

Play became frantic as both sides tried to score before the end of regulation with seven shots being taken in the last 15 minutes. The break came for Kenyon in the 84th minute when Atli Hrafnkelsson scored on a loose ball in the Quaker penalty area. Felix Maurer had saved a shot from Trevor Gleason but Hrafnkelsson pounced on the deflected ball before a Wilmington defender could stop him.

Maurer had three saves in his loss and Lords goalkeeper Ian McInturf also recorded three saves.

The Quakers take to the pitch again Saturday against Anderson University (Ind.) in their last non-conference game of the season.
