Coop’s troops tops: WHS makes a clean sweep of American

WILMINGTON – With four champions, the Wilmington High School tennis team made it a clean sweep of the SBAAC American Division this season at the annual league tournament on the WHS courts.

“Today was a great day of tennis,” WHS tennis coach Doug Cooper said. “For our players, it was the culmination of countless hours of work in the off-season and the results show it. The numbers tell the story.”

Wilmington, unbeaten in the regular season, could have won the overall league championship by finishing no worse than third in the tournament.

But the Lady Hurricane wrapped up the crown in grand style by winning four courts and finishing as runnerup on another.

Claire Burns at first singles, Allie Kees at second singles, Josie Nichols at third singles the first doubles pairing of Emilee Pham and Jenna Taylor wore the laurel of champions.

Clinton-Massie had a strong team. Any other year and the Falcons may have been on top of the division, but Wilmington was simply too strong.

Paige Wood and Kenzie Stinchcomb won the second doubles title for Massie, claiming a classic three-set win over Annie Osborn and Gracie Conger of WHS.

“Paige and Kenzie played their tennis of the season, with solid baseline play and great net shots,” Lynn Deatherage, CM coach, said. “We always dream of sending our seniors out with a win. Today was Paige’s day.

One of the top matches of the day came at first singles where Nina Lazic of Massie defeated Sophia Dragoo of New Richmond 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in a two and a half hour battle.

“Their pairing is always emotionally charged,” Deatherage said.

Wilmington’s singles title were relatively easy wins for Burns, Kees and Nichols. They were hardly challenged. Taylor and Pham had it equally easy at first doubles.

“Over the years, we’ve been in some extremely close conference tournaments, sometimes on the winning end, sometimes losing,” Cooper said. “This one was different.
