WILLIAMSBURG – East Clinton was defeated by Preble Shawnee in its first match Wednesday in the OHSAA State Duals Div. III Region 23A tournament at Williamsburg High School.
The Astros were defeated by the Arrows 51-27. The Arrows then lost to host Williamsburg 42-36 in the championship match. Williamsburg advances to next week’s Div. III Region 23 semifinals at Versailles. Williamsburg is matched up with fellow Southern Buckeye Conference squad Bethel-Tate in one semifinal match while Versailles faces Covington in the other semifinal.
On Wednesday, Austin Brock’s 9-2 win at 120 pounds got the Astros on the scoreboard but Preble Shawnee led 18-3 going into the 132-pound match. Kalob Williams earned a pin at 132 but EC still trailed by 15, 24-9, with the 145-pound match up next.
With forfeits at 145 by Noah Morgan and 160 by Charles Erdman sandwiched around a pin by Thomas Wright at 152, the Astros surged into the lead 27-24.
But Preble Shawnee reeled off five straight wins — three by forfeit — to claim the victory and advance to the next round.
