WILMINGTON — The Wilmington College men’s soccer team lost a key Ohio Athletic Conference match to Baldwin Wallace University 2-1 after a goal in double overtime.

The Fightin’ Quakers are 10-5-2 overall, 3-3-1 OAC. The Yellow Jackets are 10-8-0 overall, 3-4-0 in the OAC.

Baldwin Wallace put up the first goal of the evening in the 17th minute to take an early lead. Danny Ruple sent a cross off a corner kick that Trevor Hamm was able to get his head on for a score. The Quakers struggled to generate offense in the first half and were outshot 8-2.

Wilmington managed to quickly turn the tide in the second half with a 49th minute goal by Zach Burgmeier with an assist from Piyo Debesay.

The Quakers took the momentum as the rain began to fall and started building some chances to score. A 74th minute foul by Baldwin Wallace just outside its own penalty area looked like it would be a promising chance for Wilmington to take the lead, but Burgmeier’s shot went high. The Quakers led in shots in the second half 4-2, but neither team was able to score leading to overtime.

The first overtime period was played to completion with the Quakers pelting the Yellow Jackets goal with shots, but with no result. Atilla Nagy Jr. scored in the 109th minute on Baldwin Wallace’s only shot of overtime, the Quakers led overtime shots 7-1.

Felix Maurer took the loss for Wilmington with two saves while Patrick Mehal garnered the win for the Yellow Jackets with five saves.

The Quakers will play defending OAC champions, Capital University in Bexley 7 p.m. Wednesday.
