ADRIAN, Mich. — Three individuals — Chris Beltre, Clayton Schirmer and Bruno Pattison — claimed match wins Saturday as the Wilmington College wrestling team opened its 2019-20 season at the Adrian Bulldogs Invitiational.

Beltre, competing in the 149-pound weight class, fell via technical fall (2:58) to Hayden Bates of Heidelberg University in the second round, but battled back for his first collegiate victory in the second round of consolation by defeating Elijah Waters of Adrian College via fall (1:41). His next Bulldog opponent, Wyatt Adams, ended Beltre’s run in the consolation draw with a technical fall victory (7:00).

Schirmer, competing in the 157-pound weight class, won his opening round via decision (7-2) over Heidelberg’s Joseph Damm. Schirmer then lost to Samuel Shaw of Adrian in the quarterfinals via decision by the same score (7-2).

Bruno Pattison was the other Fightin’ Quaker to claim a match victory, doing so in the 197-pound weight class. He won via decision (7-2) over Thomas’ Tyson of St. Clair Community College. Similar to Schirmer, Pattison also was defeated in his quarterfinal round match, falling to Micahel Jacobs of Adrian in 4:01.

Wilmington had several other individuals competing in various weight classes that didn’t claim a match win — Gabe Obregon (141-pound), Adrian Salamone (149-pound), Jaymon Flaugher (165-pound) and Patrick Kelley (174-pound).

“We competed hard every match,” second-year head coach Justin Kihn said. “We learned a lot about where we are as a team and the positions we need to improve on as the season goes on.”

The Quakers return to action Nov. 13 for an Ohio Athletic Conference dual match at Heidelberg.
