Lewises help Marco Island team win Florida title

Former Wilmington residents Karen and Sam Lewis were members of the Marco Island YMCA 7.0 Mixed Doubles 55 and over tennis team that captured the State of Florida USTA Sectional Championship Nov. 15-17 in St. Petersburg.

In the championship match Marco Island defeated the Brevard County team from Melbourne 2-1.

In addition to Sam Lewis, team members that participated in the state tournament were Roberto Pericoli, Brita Swanson, Peggy Chandler, John Valenti, Mary Mastrogiacomo, Mark Waks and Ramsay Erickson. The team captain is Ray Gauch.

In addition to Karen Lewis, other team members during the season who played a vital role in winning the local league included Susan Nimmo, Mark Bunecky, Anthony Tarakdijan, Connie Johnson, Chuck Schmidt and Isabelle Adly.

The Marco team went 8-3 to win their local league during the season and then were a perfect 5-0 in the state tournament.

By virtue of the Florida Section Championship, the Marco Island team will now advance to play in the USTA National Championships in Vancouver, Wash. in April.
