WOOSTER — The Wilmington College men’s basketball team was tied 43-43 with 21st-ranked College of Wooster with 15:44 to play in regulation, but the Fighting Scots pulled away down the stretch to earn an 86-65 victory in the Al Van Wie/Wooster Rotary Classic Saturday.

Jeffery Mansfield led Wilmington in scoring with 17 points while Colin Myers went 5-for-7 from beyond the arc for 15 points. DaeShawn Jackson was the other Quaker in double figures, scoring 14 points to go along with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.

All five Wooster starters scored in double figures including Keonn Scott’s 18 points.

Wilmington (1-2) hosts Earlham College Monday for the Quaker Bowl Rivalry. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The Fightin’ Quakers scored eight of the first 10 points including a three-pointer from Payton Smith and an old-fashioned, three-point play as well as a layup from Abdul Kanu. Wilmington held that lead and actually extended it to 21-13 at the 11:03 mark as Aaron Mullins scored, was fouled and converted from the charity stripe.

Five minutes later, Brandon Styers returned the favor to give Wooster its first lead (28-26) of the game. Both teams would score 10 points over the final six-plus minutes as the hosts went into the locker room up 38-36.

The two sides were tied 43-43 just over four minutes into the second half, but a 26-9 run over the next eight minutes put the game away.

Wooster finished 30-of-58 (51.7 percent) from the field and 19-of-24 (79.2 percent) from the free throw line. Wilmington countered with a 20-of-60 (33.3 percent) from the field and converted 17-of-19 (89.5 percent) from the charity stripe. The Scots grabbed 45 rebounds to the Quakers’ 27.
