Defense keys effort as EC girls win first 38-22

MOWRYSTOWN — East Clinton’s defense held Whiteoak to 15 percent shooting Saturday en route to a 38-22 win in non-league girls basketball action a the WHS gym.

East Clinton evens its record at 1-1 with the victory.

“We handled ball better but still need to improve,” EC coach Jeff Craycraft said. “We did a better job of contesting shots but still need to work on boxing out.”

East Clinton had 20 turnovers and was outrebounded 41-35.

Gracie Evanshine had 11 points, eight of those in the third period, for East Clinton. Josie Jones and Libby Evanshine had seven rebounds each. Kami Whiteaker handed out three assists.

The Lady Astros held the Lady Wildcats without a field goal in the first period and took an 8-1 lead.

Whiteoak cut the difference to four on Kara Ward’s three pointer but East Clinton held a 16-6 lead at halftime.

Gracie Evanshine had eight points in the third as East Clinton took control of the game after halftime. The Astros held a 31-16 advantage going to the final quarter.
