Lady Hurricane drops road game at Springfield 57-45

SPRINGFIELD — Springfield’s 19-3 run to end the first half helped down Wilmington 57-45 in a non-conference girls basketball tilt Monday.

The Hurricane (1-2) fell in a 5-0 hole early but rallied to tie the game at 7, 10 and 12.

Wilmington led 19-15 a minute and a half into the second period, before Springfield’s 19-3 spurt gave the Wildcats (2-0) a 34-22 cushion at the break.

“You spend so much energy to fight back and you have a little less legs on the offensive end,” Wilmington head coach Zach Williams said. “And then you feel rushed. We need to be patient.”

Springfield’s lead bounced between nine and 14 most of the second half.

“Coming out in the fourth quarter, I challenged them to get the first three stops. We got the first nine stops. But we only got three points,” Williams said. “We’re doing a great job on the defensive end. Then we rush things offensively with an out-of-control shot or we don’t hit our free throws. We can’t do all that hard work defensively and not capitalize.

“Overall, we battled and never gave up.”

Jasmine Jamiel led the Hurricane with 15 points.

Camryn Nadir led Springfield with 23 while Mikayla Perdue added 19. They only combined for 12 after the break.
