WHS stampedes Stallions 74-48

WILMINGTON — Jarron Cumberland and his teammates have made the 30-point rout a routine occurrence as Wilmington has marched through South Central Ohio League league play this season.

On Tuesday night, the Hurricane made a non-conference foe a blowout victim as the home team led by as many as 34 in a 74-48 blitzing of Columbus St Francis DeSales at Fred Summers Court.

Cumberland led a balanced Wilmington scoring line with 31 points, while Cameron Stewart added 16 on 4-of-5 from 3-point land. Cumberland also had 9 rebounds and 4 blocked shots.

A sluggish Wilmington start saw DeSales hang around early, trailing only 13-8 before Stewart buried a trey as time ticked down in the opening quarter.

Wilmington’s defense helped the home team break things open in the second quarter and an 18-5 run helped the ‘Cane build a 41-17 halftime advantage. DeSales had trouble handling Wilmington’s trapping defense all night as the Stallions committed 6 turnovers in each of the first two quarters and had 20 in the game. Wilmington turned it over only 8 times.

Offensively for Wilmington, the starting five accounted for all 74 points with Cumberland and Stewart leading the way and Dylan Beaugard joining then in double figures with 10 points. Chris Wolary posted 9 points and 6 rebounds, while Alex Miller had 8 points and 4 boards.

For DeSales, 6-8 center Caden Sanchez led the way with 16 points and 7 rebounds. Ryan Peaks chipped in with 9 points, Luke Hipler scored 8 second-half points and Eric Fitz had 7.
