Wildcats win Taylor tourney in Shafer debut

NORTH BEND — The Blanchester wrestling team won the Rumble on the River tournament here Saturday at Taylor High School.

The Wildcats, under first-year head coach Ryan Shafer, had four weight-class champions — Hunter Smith at 113, Johnny Schirmer at 145, Colt Conover at 170 and James Peters at 220.

The Wildcats had 285 points while runnerup Aiken finished with 237.

Kadin Berwanger at 182, Carson Curless at 126 and Zane Panetta at 170 were runnersup for BHS.

Third-place finishers were Nick Musselman (132), Bryan Bandow (138) and Andrew Frump (152).

Christian Stubbs was fourth at 220.

Smith pinned Grant from Oak Hills in 1:48 to win the 113 title. Schirmer decisioned Hall of Ponitz 11-3 for the 145 crown. At 170, Conover pinned teammate Panetta in 2:22 in the finals. James Peters decisioned Brady Stokes of Taylor 13-3 in the 220 title contest.
