EC outlasts BHS 47-44 in 3 overtimes

BLANCHESTER — MaKenzy Weiner gave East Clinton the lead for good in the third overtime Thursday as the Astros defeated Blanchester 47-44 in a junior varsity girls game at the BHS gym.

For Blancheser, Hailey Mulvihill led all scorers with 17 points. Noelani Tangonan had nine while Ainsley Whitaker and Emma Winemiller had five points each.

Blan coach Pete Jackson said despite the loss his squad is playing hard.

Maddie Wells and Olivia Potts scored three points each and Maddie Tipton added two.

Mulvihill made a pair of free throws with 7.3 seconds to play in regulation to put the game into the first overtime, tied at 31-31.

In the overtime, Jaden Murphy had a steal and converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give EC a 36-33 lead. But Mulvihill had a steal and layin with 11.8 seconds to go that tied the game a 36 and the teams went to a second extra session.

Murphy and Mulvihill scored as the teams traded the lead. Jozie Jones put East Clinton on top 43-42 with just under a minute to go. Mulvihill put Blan in front 44-43 before Murphy made a free throw with 35 seconds left to forge another tie, 44-44.

In the final overtime, Weiner scored with 47 seconds to play and Murphy added a free throw with 14 seconds to go that sealed the win for EC.
