Holland, Current lift Hurricane over Broncos 34-32

MT. ORAB — Logan Current missed the past two seasons for medical reasons.

The Wilmington High School junior is making up for lost time.

Current posted a pin in the final match of the night to give Wilmington a thrilling 34-32 win over reigning SBAAC wrestling champion Western Brown Thursday at the WB gym.

“I was very confident that he would do fine but I am sure the other coaches had no idea who Logan was,” WHS head coach Kelly Tolliver said. “Logan knew walking on to the mat that if he did not pin, the team would lose. He went to work right away getting the first take down and then punishing his opponent on the mat, racking up back points. In the second period, Logan put him on his back and pinned him. It was an electric evening, the team and fans exploded.”

Wilmington also defeated Batavia 51-24 in the first round of the four-team event.

The Hurricane match against Western Brown came down to Current at 182 and Kile Holland at 170. Wilmington trailed 32-22.

”The least we could do and still win was pin and tech (fall) in the last two matches,” said Tolliver.

At 170 Holland’s opponent was hurt while being taken down, the WHS coach said. After a time, the two wrestlers went back out and Holland “took that wrestler straight to their back and the other coach stopped the match and medically defaulted.”

That made put the WHS deficit at 32-28 and put Current in line for the match-winning heroics.
