Wildcats run away with Madeira tourney title

MADEIRA — Blanchester ran away with the Bob Kearns Madeira Invitational wrestling tournament championship Saturday at MHS.

For the Wildcats, Colt Conover and James Peters picked up first-place hardware by winning their respective weight classes.

Conover battled Jon Cline of East Clinton in the 170-pound championship match. Conover scored a pin in 2:20 for the championship.

Leading up to the match with Cline, Conover had a pin (1:43) and tech fall (16-0, 4:36) in his first two matches.

Peters had two pins (1:57 and 1:55) leading up to his championship match at 220 with Colin Shelton of Batavia. Peters dominated Shelton for a 16-2 win.

East Clinton finished 15th out of 23 teams. Cline was the lone wrestler to place among the top four in his weight class.

Also for Blanchester, Hunter Smith was runnerup at 106, losing by pin to Colby Johnson of Clermont Northeastern in the championship match.

Johnny Schirmer finished as runnerup at 138, as Harris Foad of Indian Hill posted a 17-1 win in the title match.

Gage Huston lost a heartbreaker to Ian Goodpaster of Deer Park in the 160 pound final, 9-7 SV 6:28.

Gage Berwanger was third at 132 pounds, Kadin Berwanger was third at 182 pounds and Christian Stubbs was fourth at 195.
