WILMINGTON – Bailey Zerby’s layup with 9.6 seconds dealt Wilmington a heartbreaking 49-48 loss Monday at Fred Summers Court.

Zerby’s game-winner capped a frenetic final minute that featured three lead changes. Dreann Pryce’s put back of a missed three put the Eagles (11-2) up 47-45. That was Bellbrook’s first lead since 2-1. Jasmine Jamiel’s three put Wilmington back up 48-47 with 16 seconds to go in the contest.

Zerby and Pryce shared team-high scoring honors with 14 points.

Wilmington’s Katie Murphy led all scorers with 19 points, nine of them in the fourth quarter.

“I tried to call timeout after Jaz hit the three. They didn’t hear it, obviously,” WHS head coach Zach Williams said. “I’m interested to see what happened there as far as what happened to us on the court, if we were celebrating or stopped or what not, because right after that Bellbrook turned around and got a layup.”

Wilmington (5-6) committed a turnover during its final possession as time expired.

“We just wanted to attack. We got the ball in. They backed off the press. We just told them to get to the rack. We just didn’t execute it in crunch time,” Williams said. “It just came down to we haven’t been in that situation. I told the girls that’s partly my fault because we haven’t executed that in practice, those pressure situations with that intensity and that level of urgency. We’ve been working on other things in practice. It falls on all of us, especially me for not having them ready in that situation.”

Wilmington’s largest leads of the evening were 27-19 at the 3:31 mark of the third quarter and 36-28 at the 6:27 mark of the fourth quarter.

“We had way too many turnovers. We missed some free throws early on. Those things add up,” Williams said. “I’m very proud of their effort. The girls played extremely hard tonight. Bellbrook is a good team. They just got the better of us tonight.”
