WC women rally, fall agonizingly short 81-76

COLUMBUS — Capital scored the first 13 points of the game Wednesday and went on to defeat the Wilmington College women’s basketball team 81-76 in Ohio Athletic Conference action at CU’s Capital Center.

Wilmington drops to 7-5 overall and 3-2 in the OAC. Capital is 8-4, 3-2.

McKayla Binkley had 24 points, nine rebounds and four steals for WC.

Wilmington fell behind 13-0 and didn’t score until Ellen Nilback hit a jumper at 4:06 of the first quarter.

The difference grew to 23-3 near the quarter’s end and was 26-8 going to the second. Capital had a 9-0 run and led 33-8 at 7:34 of the second.

It was 40-18 midway through the second when WC mounted a charge with 10 unanswered points. Kennedy Lewis had five during the run.

Capital had a 46-29 lead then WC scored eight to make it 46-37. Capital seemed to have the game under control but Wilmington rallied with three late.

Lewis had a steal and layup with 36 seconds to play to make it 77-74. Lewis later made a layup, 79-76, with 14 seconds to go.

But the Crusaders made their final six free throws to seal the win.
