WC wrestling season ends with 4 at regional

ADRIAN, Mich. – The Wilmington College wrestling team closed the 2019-2020 season at the Division III Regional Central Championships hosted by Adrian College this weekend. Four Quakers competed in four different weight-classes on Friday and Saturday.

In the 133-pound weight class, Jacob Fox fell to Elijah Philip of Manchester University in 0:46 in the opening round and bowed out the championships with a loss in 1:22 to Wabash College’s Owen Doster.

“Jacob came to us in the second semester and suffered an injury in his second competition,” WC head coach Justin Kihn said. “He showed a lot of heart fighting through his injury and competing this weekend. We are excited about his abilities moving forward.”

At 141 pounds, Adrian Salamone also lost twice via fall. He opened by dropping a match to Nathaniel McClanahan of Mount St. Joseph in 1:50 and followed that with a 3:13 match against Olivet College’s Andrew Castaneda.

“Adrian loves wrestling and always makes practices and competitions fun,” Kihn said. “He has a contagious positive attitude that always lifts up the team.”

In the 157-pound weight class, Patrick Kelley competed against Schuyler Caprella of Ohio Northern University and Bryce Wittman of Ohio Wesleyan University. He lost both matches via fall in 1:36 and 0:44 respectively.

“Patrick has made significant improvements this season with his technique and his mental approach to the sport,” Kihn said. “He works extremely hard and is always coachable. He has and will continue to develop as a great leader in our program.”

At 174 pounds, Spencer Dukes lost to Cornell Beachem of Mount St. Joseph University by fall in 0:11 in the opening round and was defeated by Adrian College’s Bryant Moore via fall in 1:18 in the next round.

“Spencer wants to be the best and has the physical tools as well as the determination to get there,” said Kihn. “He has spent more time wrestling this year than ever before and will continue to learn in chasing his goal.”
