Henson, Veidt, Woods win WNJ Scholar-Athlete Award

The winners of the 2020 Wilmington News Journal Clinton County Scholar-Athlete award are East Clinton’s Aidan Henson, Clinton-Massie’s Gabby Woods and Wilmington’s Olivia Veidt.

Among the 23 nominees submitted by high school coaches and athletic directors, this trio was at the top on each ballot of the distinguished panel of judges.

Each of the winners receives $500. Sponsors for the award are Bush Auto Place, Drayer Physical Therapy Institute, Edward Jones, GradeCo, and Smith-Feike-Minton Insurance.

Following are the profiles of the three winners:

GABBY WOODS

Clinton-Massie High School

Nominating Coach: Tim McGraw

Academic: 3.96 GPA. ACT 23. Outstanding Leadership Award, National Honor Society, co-secretary National Honor Society.

Athletic: 3 time first team All-SBAAC. 1 time first team All-SCOL. 3 time SBAAC Player of the Year. 2 time SBAAC individual tournament champion. 4 time District qualifier. 2019 District Champion. 4th in Div II state tournament, All-Ohio in 2019. School record for 9- and 18-holes. 2 time first team All-SWGGCA. 2019 SWGGCA Player of the Year, Cincinnati Enquirer Div. II Girls Golfer of the Year.

AIDAN L. HENSON

East Clinton High School

Academic: 4.0 GPA. ACT 26. Class Valedictorian. National Honor Society. Straight A honor roll all 4 years high school. R&L Hometown Showcase Achievement Award. Rotary Student of the Month. American History Student of the Year. Military History Award. Algebra II Straight A’s Award; Pre-calculus Straight A’s Award, CCP Chemistry Straight A’s Award, CCP Language and Composition Academic Award.

Athletic: 4 years track and field, regional qualifier, 2 times All-SBAAC, SBAAC Runner of the Year, EC team MVP, 3 times team captain, 800 meter record holder. 4 years cross country, 2 times regional qualifier, 3 times first team All-SBAAC, 2 times SBAAC Runner of the Year, 4 times EC team MVP, 3 times team captain. 2 years varsity tennis, 1 year varsity golf.

OLIVIA VEIDT
