Quaker wrestlers open with loss to HU, ONU

ADA — The Wilmington College wrestling team opened its 2020-21 season with a pair of dual meet losses to Heidelberg University and Ohio Northern University Sunday. The Fightin’ Quakers fell to the Polar Bears 46-0 and the Student Princes 39-6.

In the loss to Ohio Northern, Jack Probus (133-pound weight class), Patrick Kelley (165-pound weight class), Elijah Wood (174-pound weight class) and Skyler Cowgill (184-pound weight class) were defeated by fall. Two others, Jacob Scoville (141-pound weight class) and Adrian Salamone (157-pound weight class), lost via technical fall.

Finally, Avery Bair (165-pound weight class) and Shadrach Brausch (285-pound weight class) lost matches by decision, 7-2 and 9-2 respectively.

In the loss to Heidelberg, the Fightin’ Quakers won the lightweight and heavyweight classes. Probus picked up an 8-4 victory over David Ocasio at 133 while Brausch edged Da’veon Parker,-5, at 285. The Student Princes claimed all other weight classes.

“We have looked forward to (Sunday) for a long time and to actually get a chance for our guys to get on the mat and compete against people from other schools was huge in the development process,” head wrestling coach Justin Kihn said. “We learned a lot about what we do well and where we need to get some extra work. It is exciting to have a quick turn around and get back after it next week.”

Wilmington returns to action Sunday with dual meets against John Carroll University and Baldwin Wallace University in Berea.
