Carter has hot bat, WC goes 1-3 on opening weekend

The Wilmington College softball team started its season 1-3 this weekend.

On Saturday, the Quakers split with Heidelberg, losing 9-8 and winning 5-3. On Sunday, Wilmington was swept by Otterbein 7-3 and 9-8.

The Quakers will begin Ohio Athletic Conference play this coming weekend against Heidelberg.

On Sunday, in the first game, Wilmington got a solo homerun from Hayley Suchland and Alecia Kemp singled home Lindsey Carter (Clinton-Massie graduate). WC also scored a run with a bases loaded hit by pitch.

Carter, Hillary Huffer and Kiley Lowe pitched for Wilmington.

Kemp finished with three hits while Carter had two hits and two runs scored.

In the second game, Carter and Lizz Hadley had back-to-back runs batted in in the first inning. Arianna Layne had a two-run homer in the second for Wilmington. Suchland homered in the fourth to tie the game at 7-7.

Sydney Harville, Alexis Stringfellow and Suchland pitched for Wilmington.

Carter had four hits, including a homerun, and drove in three runs. Layne and Suchland had two hits each.

On Saturday, at WC in the opener, Carter had four hits while Megan Crager and Layne both had multi-hit games and scored three times. Hadley had two hits.

In the second game, Suchland went the distance in the circle, scattering five hits and striking out seven. Layne had three hits and two RBIs.
