ALLIANCE — The University of Mount Union scored the game-winning goal in the 89th minute Sunday to earn a 2-1 Ohio Athletic Conference win over the Wilmington College men’s soccer team.

The Purple Raiders, who hadn’t played since the season-opener, scored first as Ryan Sarkisian slipped a pass to Ryland Wickle, who beat Wilmington goalkeeper Felix Maurer, with a shot in the 14th minute.

The Fightin’ Quakers answered less than 10 minutes into the second half when a foul in the box resulted in the equalizer. Zach Burgmeier converted the penalty kick to tie the game.

The match appeared to be headed to overtime for the third consecutive game between the two schools, but Wickle broke free off a pass from Carter Hanock and delivered the game-winner with 1:03 to play.

Both teams took a dozen shots in the game with Maurer taking the loss and making four saves. Burgmeier fired four shots on goal for Wilmington while Grant Murray and Brady Shapiro each took two shots.

Wilmington (2-1-0) will host Ohio Northern University 7 p.m. Thursday at Townsend Field.
